After nearly six years of being matched, Anne and Katie's mentoring match through Big Brothers Big Sisters has officially come to a close. With Katie turning 18, the formal agreement ends – but the connection doesn’t. Both Anne and Katie intend to stay in contact, continuing the strong relationship they’ve built over time.
The graduation was a wonderful occasion filled with shared memories. When asked about their favourite moments, neither could choose just one. Katie said, “The whole match, I can’t pick a single thing, just Anne is my favourite part!” It was extra special to have Patricia, who was there at the start of their match in 2020, join the celebration.
Throughout their journey, Anne and Katie shared many special moments together - from crocheting and baking, to walks, café catch-ups, and ice cream outings. Yet, it was often the simple, quieter moments – sitting, talking, and spending one-on-one time – that mattered most. Their relationship created a consistent, supportive space where Katie could be herself, feel heard, and grow in confidence.
Over the years, Katie has developed into a confident and capable young woman. She successfully balanced school with paid employment, supported along the way by Anne’s steady encouragement, guidance, and presence as both a mentor and friend.
Anne said, “Mentoring Katie has been a truly rewarding experience”. She feels grateful to have been part of Katie’s journey and to witness her growth.
Katie’s mum, Amie, reflected on how meaningful the match has been for Katie: “It has been a great match – Katie has grown so much, it’s been wonderful to see.” She acknowledged the time, care, and support Anne has given, and the important role she has played in Katie’s development.
